Powder Coating

Sourced through established finishing partners, electrostatic powder coating delivers a tough, thick, VOC-free finish that outperforms conventional liquid paint in durability and environmental protection.

Overview

What Is Powder Coating?

Powder Coating Production

Powder coating is a dry finishing process that has become one of the most popular surface treatment methods for architectural aluminum. Unlike conventional liquid paint, powder coating uses finely ground particles of pigment and resin that are electrostatically charged and sprayed onto the grounded aluminum substrate.

The charged powder particles adhere to the surface electrostatically, then the workpiece enters a curing oven where the powder melts, flows and chemically cross-links to form a smooth, hard, continuous film. The result is a finish that is significantly thicker and more impact-resistant than liquid paint, with excellent adhesion and corrosion protection.

Ballesta works with established powder coating partners whose lines feature automated spray booths with advanced recovery systems that capture and reuse over-sprayed powder, achieving material utilization rates above 95%. The lines handle parts up to 6 meters in length, accommodating everything from ceiling panels to large facade components.

Powder Types

Available Powder Formulations

Choose from different powder chemistries depending on the application environment and performance requirements.

PVDF Powder

Fluorocarbon-based powder formulated for exterior architectural applications. Provides exceptional UV resistance, color stability and chalk resistance comparable to liquid PVDF coatings but with the environmental advantages of powder technology.

Polyester (PE) Powder

The most widely used powder coating for architectural metal. Polyester powder offers excellent mechanical properties, good weather resistance and superior color retention at a cost-effective price point. Suitable for both interior and semi-exterior applications.

Variety of Finishes

Available in high gloss (80-90%), semi-gloss (40-60%), matte (15-30%) and ultra-matte (5-10%). Textured options include sand, wrinkle, hammer-tone and metallic effects. All RAL colors plus custom formulations.

Key Advantages

Why Choose Powder Coating

Zero VOC Emissions

Powder coating contains no solvents and emits zero VOCs during application or curing. This makes it one of the most environmentally friendly finishing options and eliminates the need for expensive solvent capture and disposal systems.

Thick, Durable Finish

60-120 microns in a single coat provides superior impact resistance, chip resistance and edge coverage compared to liquid paint. The thermoset curing process creates a tough, cross-linked polymer film that resists scratches and abrasion.

Strong Adhesion

Electrostatic attraction combined with heat fusion creates exceptional bond strength between the coating and the aluminum substrate, passing 100/100 cross-cut adhesion tests. The coating will not peel or delaminate under normal service conditions.

Color Richness

Available in virtually unlimited colors and gloss levels. Metallic, textured and special effect finishes allow architects to achieve unique surface aesthetics that cannot be replicated with liquid paint systems.

Outdoor Durability

Exterior-grade PVDF powder formulations provide 15+ year weather resistance with minimal color change. Suitable for facade components, solar shading louvers and exterior ceiling systems exposed to direct sunlight.

Cost-Effective Production

Through our partners' powder coating lines, clients benefit from high material utilization (95%+ reclaim), single-coat application, and fast curing times — making powder coating one of the most cost-effective finishing methods for volume production.

Applications

Typical Applications

Powder coating is one of the most versatile finishing technologies available, suitable across nearly all Ballesta product categories:

  • Ceiling Panels: Strip, lay-in, clip-in and open-cell ceiling components — any RAL color
  • Baffle Ceilings: Linear and U-shaped baffles for airports, railway stations and commercial atriums
  • Facade Cladding: Aluminum composite panels, honeycomb panels and solid panels for exterior walls
  • Solar Shading: Fixed and adjustable louver blades for sun control systems
  • Wall Panels: Interior feature walls, column cladding and decorative screen systems
  • Custom Fabrications: OEM parts, special profiles and bespoke architectural elements

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between powder coating and liquid paint for aluminum?

Powder coating is a dry process where electrostatically charged powder particles are sprayed onto the aluminum surface then heat-cured to form a hard, durable finish. Unlike liquid paint, powder coating contains no solvents, produces zero VOCs, and delivers a thicker, more uniform coating (60-120 microns) in a single application without drips or runs.

Can powder coating be used for exterior architectural applications?

Yes. Through our finishing partners, Ballesta offers PVDF powder coating specifically formulated for exterior use, providing excellent UV resistance and weather durability. Standard polyester powder is suitable for semi-exterior and interior applications. Always specify the exposure level when requesting a quote so our team can recommend the appropriate powder formulation.

What colors and gloss levels are available for powder coating?

Any RAL or custom color is available. Gloss levels range from 5% (matte) to 90% (high gloss). Textured finishes including sand, wrinkle and hammer-tone effects are also available. Custom colors require a minimum order quantity.

What is the typical turnaround time for powder coating at Ballesta?

Standard powder coating turnaround is 5-10 working days for standard RAL colors. Custom color matching adds 2-3 days. For large production runs, our partners' lines can process up to 50,000 sqm per month.

How thick is the powder coating layer compared to liquid paint?

Powder coating typically achieves 60-120 microns in a single coat, which is thicker than most liquid paint systems that require multiple coats to reach comparable thickness. The thicker coating provides superior edge coverage, impact resistance and long-term durability, especially on complex profiles and sharp corners where liquid paint tends to thin out.

Is powder coating environmentally friendly?

Yes. Powder coating is one of the most environmentally friendly finishing methods available. It contains zero solvents and produces no VOCs (volatile organic compounds) during application or curing. Over-sprayed powder is captured and recycled, achieving material utilization rates above 95%, which minimizes waste. No hazardous solvent disposal is required, making it compliant with strict environmental regulations worldwide.
