Backlit Wall Panels

Illuminated wall panel systems with LED backlighting for dramatic visual effects in lobbies, feature walls, and commercial spaces. Precision metal panels with integrated lighting.

Product Overview

Backlit Wall Panels

Ballesta backlit wall panels transform architectural surfaces into illuminated design statements. Precision-engineered aluminum panels paired with integrated LED lighting create feature walls that are equal parts architecture and art. From the warm ambient glow of a hotel lobby to the dynamic brand wall of a retail flagship, our backlit systems deliver the visual impact that today's premium commercial interiors demand.

Three Lighting Techniques

Edge-lit panels with light guide plates for uniform glow, direct backlit with LED strips for even illumination, and perforated-through for patterned light effects. Each method creates a distinct visual character.

Custom Light Patterns

Perforation maps, cut-out graphics, slot patterns, or translucent inserts precisely positioned to control light output. Logos, brand marks, and image halftones rendered as glowing metal surfaces.

Seamless Integration

Hidden wiring channels, accessible LED mounting trays, and maintenance access hatches. Light appears to emanate from within the wall surface. No visible fixtures or exposed cables.

Full Lighting Control

DALI or DMX control for precise dimming, color tuning, and scene programming. Supports circadian schedules, occupancy-linked auto-dimming, and dynamic color transitions for branded environments.

Gravity Hook-On Installation

Panels install on a hook-on bracket system that leverages gravity for natural flatness. Each panel independently removable for LED maintenance without disturbing adjacent panels.

Design Versatility

Any finish, any color, any pattern. Combine backlit with solid panels for contrast. Mix illumination types within one wall. Flat, curved, or 3D-formed panel surfaces available.

Lighting Technologies

Three Backlight Methods

Ballesta offers three distinct lighting technologies optimized for different design objectives. Each method produces a unique visual quality and requires different panel construction, and our team helps specify the right approach for every project.

Edge-Lit (Light Guide Plate)

LED strips mounted along the panel perimeter. Light enters a transparent acrylic or polycarbonate light guide plate (LGP) bonded to the aluminum face panel, where micro-dots scatter the light uniformly across the entire surface. This produces the thinnest overall panel profile (as little as 15mm total thickness) and the most evenly distributed glow. Ideal for corporate lobbies, brand walls, and signage where ultra-slim profiles are desired.

Best for: Uniform glow, slim profile, corporate brand walls, logo walls, reception backdrops. Panel depth: 15-25mm total.

Direct Backlit (LED Grid)

A grid of LED strips or LED modules mounted behind the panel at uniform spacing (typically 100-200mm centres). A diffuser layer between LEDs and the metal face panel evens out the light, eliminating hot spots. Direct backlit systems deliver higher brightness than edge-lit and support dynamic effects and zoning at lower cost. Each LED zone can be individually controlled for gradient, wave, or chase effects.

Best for: High brightness, dynamic effects, retail environments, entertainment venues, large-scale installations. Panel depth: 60-120mm.

Perforated-Through

LEDs placed behind a perforated metal panel. Light passes through precisely sized and positioned holes to create defined patterns, imagery, or typography. The metal panel acts as a mask - light only emerges where perforations exist, creating sharp contrast between illuminated holes and dark metal. This method enables the most intricate visual effects, including photographic halftones, text, and brand marks.

Best for: Patterned light, logo illumination, graphic walls, branded environments, artistic installations. Open area: 5-45%.

Light Patterns & Effects

Visual Possibilities

The true power of backlit panels lies in the interaction between metal, light, and pattern. Ballesta's fabrication capabilities allow virtually unlimited visual outcomes.

Uniform Glow

Solid metal panels with edge-lit or direct backlighting produce a seamless, even illumination across the entire surface. The panel appears to glow gently from within. Color temperature can be tuned to complement surrounding finishes - warm 3000K for hospitality, neutral 4000K for offices, or cool 6000K for modern retail.

Perforation Patterns

Standard staggered, straight row, or gradient perforation patterns allow light through defined hole arrays. The ratio of open area to solid metal determines brightness and visual texture. Staggered patterns provide the densest hole coverage and produce the most uniform light distribution from perforated panels.

Graphic Perforation

CNC-controlled perforation maps translate vector artwork, logos, text, or photographic images into hole patterns. Hole size varies across the panel to create halftone gradients - each hole is a pixel of light. When backlit, the perforation image becomes vividly visible against the dark metal background.

Slot & Linear Patterns

Slot perforation creates directional light effects, where the slot orientation controls the apparent spread of light. Horizontal slots emphasize width; vertical slots emphasize height. Slot-and-gap combinations produce rhythmic light/dark bands that animate space perception.

Translucent Inserts

Instead of perforation, translucent acrylic or polycarbonate inserts embedded within the metal panel allow light to pass through defined areas. Inserts can be coloured, frosted, or textured to modify light quality. Backlighting behind inserts produces a soft diffused glow distinct from perforated-through light.

Dynamic & Interactive

With DMX or DALI control, backlit panels can change color, brightness, and pattern over time. Pre-programmed scenes, motion-responsive effects, circadian sequences, or sensor-triggered animations. Accent panels that transition between brand colors, or wayfinding walls that brighten as people approach.

Engineering Considerations

Critical Design Parameters

Successful backlit wall panel projects require balancing lighting performance with metal fabrication constraints and maintenance access. Our engineers consider these factors at the design stage.

3 Methods

Backlighting Depth

Edge-lit: 15-25mm total panel depth. LED strips along edges, light guide plate inside. Thinnest option but requires perimeter frame for LED housing.

Direct backlit: 60-120mm cavity depth. LED strips or modules on rear mounting plate. Larger cavity allows better heat dissipation and easier maintenance.

Perforated-through: 50-100mm cavity depth. Perforated face panel over LED array. Panel thickness 1.0-2.0mm.

3-20 W/m

Heat Management

LED strip power density: 3-20 W/m depending on brightness and density. Heat must be dissipated to prevent LED degradation. Edge-lit runs cooler; direct backlit requires ventilation.

Recommendations: Minimum 30mm gap behind panel for air circulation. Aluminum panel acts as natural heat sink. For high-density installations, consider dedicated ventilation channels or active cooling.

t ≥ 1.0mm

Panel Structural Requirements

Minimum panel thickness: 1.0mm for flat panels up to 1200mm. Thicker panels (1.5-2.0mm) for sizes exceeding 1200mm or panels with high open area.

Stiffening ribs: L-channel or formed ribs at 600-900mm intervals for panels over 1500mm height. Honeycomb core backing for maximum flatness in premium installations.

1:2 Ratio

Maintenance Access

Zoned access design: Divide walls into serviceable zones (typically 1200mm x 1200mm). Every panel in a zone should be individually removable without disturbing others.

Hinge or slide-out: Hinged panels for vertical walls accessible from one side. Slide-out trays for ceiling or overhead installations. LED driver location: accessible junction boxes at base of wall or above ceiling.

Brightness Planning: Target brightness depends on ambient light levels. For hotel lobbies and dim environments, 50-200 lux at the panel surface is sufficient. For retail and bright commercial spaces, 300-500 lux is recommended. Edge-lit panels typically achieve 150-300 cd/m²; direct backlit panels can achieve 500+ cd/m². Perforated panels with ≤15% open area will appear significantly dimmer than solid panels with the same LED power - our team provides photometric calculations for every project.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How is backlighting achieved?

Three methods: edge-lit (light guide plate for ultra-slim profile), direct backlit (LED grid behind panel for high brightness), and perforated-through (light passes through holes in the panel for pattern effects). Our team recommends the best method for your project’s requirements.

Can lighting be dimmed or color-changed?

Yes. All backlit panels support dimming (0-10V, DALI, or PWM). Color options include tunable white (2700K-6500K), full RGB, RGBW, and RGB+CCT. Dynamic effects, scene programming, and circadian scheduling are available with DMX or DALI controls.

What is the minimum profile thickness?

Edge-lit panels with light guide plate achieve 15-25mm total depth, the thinnest option. Direct backlit systems require 60-120mm for LED spacing and heat dissipation. Perforated-through systems need 50-100mm cavity depth behind the panel face.

How is maintenance handled?

Every panel is individually removable without disturbing adjacent panels. LED drivers are housed in accessible junction boxes. For large installations, we design service zones (typically 1200mm x 1200mm) with independent access. Front-access and rear-access configurations available.

Exterior use?

Protected exterior only - covered entryways, semi-outdoor lobbies, under-canopy areas. IP54-rated LED components and weather-sealed panel construction required. Direct sunlight exposure requires careful material selection to prevent thermal expansion issues.

Can I get a photometric study?

Yes. Ballesta provides photometric calculations and lighting simulations for every project. We specify LED density, spacing, color temperature, and expected lux levels based on your ambient light conditions, panel open area, and desired visual effect.

What control systems are compatible?

DMX512, DALI (DT6 and DT8 for color tuning), 0-10V analog dimming, and smart building integration (BACnet, KNX via gateway). Custom control programming available for complex multi-zone installations.
